COCOF: the French Community Commission
The French-speaking institution of Brussels
COCOF (Commission communautaire française) is one of Brussels' three community commissions. It exercises competences transferred by the French Community (Wallonia-Brussels Federation) in the areas of culture, social action, vocational training and health, for institutions and persons under the French-speaking language regime in Brussels.
Governance
The COCOF Assembly consists of the 72 parliamentarians from the French language group of the Brussels Parliament. Its College consists of the French-speaking members of the regional government. COCOF has its own budget and decree-making power: it can adopt decrees with the force of law in its areas of competence.
Competences
Social action and assistance to persons — Vocational training — Health policy (French-speaking component) — Culture — Sport — Tourism. COCOF operates for institutions affiliated with the French-speaking language regime: training centres, medical houses, cultural centres, etc.
Budget
COCOF's budget is approximately 600 million euros. It is funded by grants from the Region, the French Community and own revenues. COCOF is often described as the 'small French Community of Brussels': it locally exercises part of the community competences.
