Data controller

The data controller is Advice That SRL, a Belgian company. Registered office: Rue Delwart 149, 1070 Brussels. CBE: 0728.534.930. Brussels Governance Monitor is a project hosted by this company.

Data collected

We only collect data strictly necessary for the email alert service:

  • Email address (for sending weekly digests)
  • Chosen topics (to personalise alert content)
  • Preferred language (to send emails in the correct language)

Legal basis

The processing of your data is based on your explicit consent (Article 6.1.a of the GDPR). You may withdraw this consent at any time.

Data retention

Your data is retained as long as your subscription is active. Upon unsubscription, your data is deleted within 30 days.

Your rights

Under the GDPR, you have the following rights:

  • Right of access: obtain a copy of your personal data
  • Right to rectification: correct inaccurate data
  • Right to erasure: request deletion of your data
  • Right to data portability: receive your data in a structured format
  • Right to object: object to the processing of your data (Article 21)
  • Right to restriction: restrict the processing of your data (Article 18)
  • Right to withdraw consent: unsubscribe at any time in one click

Third-party processors

For the sake of transparency, here is the complete list of third-party services used by this site:

  • Hetzner (hosting): hosts the website on a server located in Nuremberg, Germany. Processes server logs (IP addresses, HTTP headers). No personal data is stored beyond temporary technical logs.
  • Cloudflare (CDN and DDoS protection): filters and delivers traffic from its European points of presence. Processes visitor IP addresses for the duration of the request. US company, certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.
  • Umami (analytics): privacy-friendly traffic measurement, self-hosted on our own server in Germany. No cookies, no personal data collected, no cross-site tracking.
  • Resend (email): sends confirmation emails and weekly digests. Processes subscriber email addresses. Based in the United States with GDPR compliance (DPA signed).

Legal basis: legitimate interest (Article 6.1.f GDPR) for Hetzner, Cloudflare and Umami; consent (Article 6.1.a) for Resend.

Transfers outside the EU: site hosting and analytics stay in Germany. Resend (US) and Cloudflare (US company) benefit from Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) and are certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework (DPF). DPAs are automatically accepted with each service's terms of use.

Daily games (Stuut and Amai)

BGM publishes two daily games about Brussels governance: Le Stuut du jour (stuut.governance.brussels), a word game, and Amai ! (amai.governance.brussels), a number game. No account is required and no cookie is set. Your progress, your game statistics and your language preference are stored only in your browser's local storage, on your own device: they are never sent to the server and you can erase them at any time by clearing your browser's site data. Traffic measurement for both games goes through the same self-hosted Umami instance as the main site, anonymously.

BGM Assistant

Questions asked to the BGM assistant are retained to improve the service. They are associated with an anonymised session identifier (non-reversible hash, renewed daily) and are never linked to an identity. No personal data is required to use the assistant.

Extended access to the assistant is offered through a voluntary contribution. The system is trust-based — no technical mechanism verifies payment server-side. If you find BGM useful, we rely on your honesty.
